Relocating to the Raleigh and Durham Area

Relocating to the Triangle

The Triangle is the part of North Carolina where Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill sit a short drive from one another, with Cary, Morrisville, Apex, Holly Springs, Wake Forest, and Garner filling in around them. The name comes from Research Triangle Park, the research campus between the three cities, and from the three universities that anchor it: North Carolina State University in Raleigh, Duke University in Durham, and the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. When people here say “the Triangle,” they mean this whole cluster of cities and towns across Wake, Durham, and Orange counties, not one place.

I made this move myself from the Bay Area about ten years ago, and most of the people I help relocate are choosing between these towns without ever having driven between them. The pages below walk through what it costs to live here, what people are glad about and what they wish they had known, how to plan a short area tour, and how to spend your first ninety days once you arrive. Each one is written from my own experience of making this move. Schedule a no-pressure consultation at calendly.com/carolyn-cteliving, or call or text 919-500-6159.

Understanding the Area

Getting to know the Triangle

The Triangle is the region anchored by Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill, with Research Triangle Park near its center. Surrounding towns such as Cary, Apex, Morrisville, Holly Springs, and Wake Forest each offer their own character, price points, home styles, and commute patterns. Newcomers are often surprised by how much variety sits within a thirty-minute drive, from downtown condos and townhomes to golf course communities and new construction neighborhoods still taking shape.

There is no single right answer to where you should land. The right area depends on your commute, your preferred home style, your budget, and how you want to spend your weekends. Sorting through those trade-offs together is where my work begins.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Triangle in North Carolina?

The Triangle is the region around Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill, named for Research Triangle Park and the three universities that anchor it: NC State, Duke, and UNC. It takes in Cary, Morrisville, Apex, Holly Springs, Wake Forest, and Garner, spread across Wake, Durham, and Orange counties. Most relocating buyers I work with end up choosing between two or three of these towns, and the rest of this section is built to help you tell them apart.

Can I buy a home in the Triangle without visiting in person?

Yes. Many of my relocation clients purchase after live video tours, detailed video walkthroughs, and thorough due diligence handled on their behalf. North Carolina closings are conducted by attorneys, and remote arrangements such as mail-away closings can be set up when travel is not practical. A scouting visit is still valuable when your timeline allows it.

How far in advance should I start planning a relocation?

Three to six months ahead is a comfortable runway for most moves. Starting early leaves time to research areas, coordinate the sale of your current home, and shop deliberately rather than under deadline pressure. Faster timelines are absolutely workable; they simply call for tighter coordination, which is exactly what my concierge approach is built for.

Which Triangle town or neighborhood is right for me?

That depends on the factors only you can weigh: commute, home style, budget, yard size, HOA preferences, and how you like to spend your time. My role is to translate those priorities into a shortlist of areas and communities, supply reliable data, and tour them with you in person or by video so you can decide with confidence.

Can you help me sell my current home too?

Yes, through coordination with a trusted listing agent in your current market. For clients moving from the San Francisco Bay Area, an established co-marketing partnership provides experienced representation on the California side while I handle everything here. Timing both transactions so they support each other is a core part of my relocation service.

Should I rent first or buy right away?

Both paths work, and the right one depends on your certainty about location and your financial picture. Renting first buys time to learn the area, though it means moving twice and watching the market from the sidelines. Buying right away avoids a second move and starts building equity sooner. Talking through your specific situation will make the answer clearer.
